Navier: Designing the Future of Luxury Electric Hydrofoil Boats

Overview:

Navier is a groundbreaking, eco-friendly electric hydrofoil vessel designed for luxury recreational use. As a hydrofoil, Navier combines the smooth floating of a boat with the dynamic controls of a plane, offering a futuristic and sustainable solution to water travel. The challenge was to create an on-board heads-up display (HUD) that would provide seamless control over the vessel’s unique features, while delivering a luxurious and futuristic user experience.

My role was to design the HUD that would allow users to manage all key functionalities, including piloting the vessel, managing on-board entertainment, and controlling lighting systems. Navier’s cutting-edge technology, which includes automated features such as auto-docking, required a high-tech interface that would feel both innovative and intuitive.

Objective:

The key objective for this project was to design an interface that merged functionality, luxury, and futurism. The HUD needed to provide users with intuitive control over the vessel’s entertainment systems, lighting, and piloting, while reflecting the premium experience of operating an advanced hydrofoil. Drawing inspiration from sci-fi and leading vehicle brands like Tesla, I aimed to create a clean, futuristic interface that translated Navier’s cutting-edge technology into an accessible and engaging user experience.

Approach:

  1. HUD Concept & Inspiration:For the on-board HUD, I drew inspiration from science fiction aesthetics and cutting-edge vehicle brands, particularly Tesla, known for its sleek, minimalist interfaces. The goal was to reflect the forward-thinking nature of Navier while ensuring that the controls were intuitive and user-friendly. I focused on creating a seamless interaction experience, where users could effortlessly switch between entertainment, lighting, and piloting modes.
  2. Luxury Meets Futurism:Since Navier is a luxury vessel, it was essential to communicate a sense of refinement and sophistication through the interface design. I incorporated clean, elegant lines, a sophisticated color palette, and subtle animations that enhanced the premium feel of the HUD. Each element was designed to evoke a sense of effortless luxury and cutting-edge technology.
  3. Unique Vessel Controls:As a hydrofoil, Navier offers a unique experience, blending boat-like floating with plane-like control dynamics. The HUD needed to accommodate this hybrid nature, providing users with clear, easy-to-understand controls for both floating and “flying” modes. I designed the interface to make the transition between these two control modes seamless, ensuring that users could feel confident in piloting the vessel even with its advanced mechanics.
  4. Automated Features:Navier offers several automated features, including an auto-docking system. I ensured that the HUD displayed these automation tools in a way that was visually integrated into the rest of the controls, making them easy to access and manage. Users could easily toggle between manual and automated controls, giving them a sense of mastery over the vessel while benefiting from cutting-edge automation.
  5. Entertainment & Lighting Controls:The HUD also needed to manage on-board entertainment and lighting systems. I designed a visually distinct interface for these features that allowed users to control them with simple gestures and touch commands. The layout was intuitive, with responsive feedback and a smooth, luxurious feel to every interaction.

Results:

The Navier HUD succeeded in combining cutting-edge technology with a luxurious, futuristic user experience. Key outcomes included:

  • Enhanced User Experience: The intuitive design allowed users to manage both piloting and on-board systems with ease, ensuring a seamless experience even for those new to hydrofoil controls.
  • Luxury Brand Alignment: The sleek, high-tech interface reflected Navier’s status as a luxury brand, enhancing the vessel’s appeal to high-end consumers.
  • Futuristic Aesthetic: Drawing from sci-fi influences, the interface created a feeling of being at the forefront of marine technology, helping Navier differentiate itself in the market.

Overall, the HUD design reinforced Navier’s vision of creating the future of eco-friendly luxury boating, combining advanced technology with effortless usability and style.
